Julio Cesar Santos banged in five goals in Pancyprian Freedoms
10-1 annihilation of Polonez at St. Johns University last
Sunday as the Greek-Cypriots began their defense of the Manning
State Cup in style.
Chris Megaloudis (two), Tasso Polydefkis, Nick Christopher and Marc
Reeves bagged the other goals against the Long Island Soccer Football
League (LISFL) entrants.
Pancyprian beat Polonia 3-2 in last seasons final, with Santos
scoring twice, to retain the Manning Cup. Theyd thrashed LISFL
champions Irish Rovers 4-1 in the 2005/2006 final.
Polonia advanced to the next round on a forfeit.
RANGERS NEXT
Next up for Pancyprian is a Round of 16 encounter on November 11
with fellow Cosmopolitan Soccer League (CSL) First Division side
Central Park Rangers, in a replay of last seasons quarterfinal
which they won 4-1.
CPR blanked the North Eastern Super Soccer Leagues (NESSL)
Quilmes 3-0 at the weekend on goals by Andres Padilla (two) and
Yuval Lion.
CPRs player-manager, Lion was a happy camper after his reserves
ousted Polonez second team 3-1 in the DArpino Cup. Marc
Cheesman and Kwesi Mills (two) connected.
With a depleted squad of 21 players (reserves played with
10), it was good to come away with both our teams making it through
safely to the next round, he said.
LANDSLIDE
Lansdowne Bhoys booked a Round of 16 showdown with Irish Rovers,
the LISFL champs, after crushing Lindenhurst 9-0 at Candlewood Middle
School.
Austin Friel starred with five goals, Gui Stampur fired in a double
while Damian Mescall (65th) and Conor Hunter (70th) each had spectacular
strikes. Mescall caught the Lindenhurst goalie off his line with
an audacious 48-yard lob while Hunter scored with a bicycle kick.
Irish Rovers, on the other hand, needed a Sean Reilly brace at the
Verazzano Sports Complex to dismiss NESSL side Albania Eagles 2-1.
BROOKLYN ROUT
Elize Villesaint notched a hat trick while Amir Aliyev and Damione
Cyrius chipped in with two goals apiece in Brooklyn Italians
7-0 romp over Lake Grove at Verazzano.
The CSL champs play the New York Albanians (CSL)-SC Olympic 78
(NESSL) winner in the next round.
HEAD GAMES
Headers by Steve Jolley and Ryan Kneipper did the trick for New
York Athletic Club who knocked out West Babylon 3-2 on the road.
Ladd Fritz was the other scorer.
NYAC, who welcomed back midfielders Brett Burns and Hussein Nasreddin
from lengthy injury layoffs, meet the Chile United (NESSL)-AC Glen
Cove (LISFL) victor on Nov. 11.
GREEKS PREVAIL
Veterans Giovanni Savarese -- whose experience includes the MLS,
Englands Swansea and the Venezuelan national team and
Tony Camaj were on target for New York Greek-American/Atlas in a
5-3 penalty decision over Forest Park on Long Island.
Kulkov and Ortega also converted spot kicks.
Dragoi (65th) scored for Atlas in the 1-1 regulation time draw.
MATT & ANDY
Barnstonworth Rovers Matt Levine and Andy Abramovits pulled
off the old one-two to kayo Integral Kings 5-1. Abramovits had a
brace while Levine notched a hat trick.
Rovers tackle the WP Scorpions (NESSL)-New York WI United (LISFL)
winner next.
CD SCARE
Steve Nyarady struck three minutes from time to bail out ten-man
CD Iberia who squeaked past NESSL opposition Los Criollos 4-3 at
Francis Lewis High School.
Iberia led 3-0 at the interval on goals by Chiki Vazquez, Nyarady
and skipper Anthony Russo when the match turned topsy-turvy for
Diego Monteagudos men.
Los Criollos pulled one back and after Iberias goalie was
ejected, fired in two more to tie the game.
However, with a penalty shoot-out looming, Vazquez broke down the
right and laid the ball to the clinical Nyarady who made no mistake.
A game of two halves, Monteagudo summed up. In
the end we won a game that we should have controlled better.
BULGARIA REMATCH
Iberias Round of 16 opponents are FC Bulgaria in a rematch
of their league showdown last month which the Spaniards won 4-1.
Bulgaria saw off Jamaica Portuguese 1-0 on Galin Andreevs
lone strike (70th).
WARY STAL
With both eyes on this weekends league fixture against New
York Albanians, under-strength Stal Mielec succumbed 4-2 to the
LISFLs Farmingville.
Our coach purposely let few of our key guys rest, because
the league is our priority and our next game against Albanians might
be crucial for us, explained Mielecs Artur Kurasiewicz.
Mariusz Plizga and Dominik Brodzinski scored for the Poles.
DARPINO CUP
New York Greek-American/Atlas reserves, the DArpino Cup holders,
were on bye in the first round, but Irish Rovers B,
the team they beat 1-0 in last seasons final, will meet the
CSLs Shamrock in round two.
The all-Irish derby was confirmed after Shamrock trounced Gotham
Argo 7-2 on Randalls Island, while Rovers defeated Forest Park 2-0,
courtesy of Eddie Beji.
Stephen Douglas led the Shamrock romp with four goals. Shane Gallagher,
Sean Barton and Paddy Geraghty also tallied for the Rocks. Darran
Cronshaw had both Gotham goals.
We played against a good side and the 7-2 (result) doesnt
reflect that. They kept coming at us, said Shamrock player-coach
Robbie Walsh.
IRISH DERBY II
Barry OConnell (70th) and Chris Vega (80th) led the Manhattan
Celtic reserves past Long Island Gaels 2-0 at Nickerson Beach Park
to secure a DArpino Cup date with Guyana Juniors.
The latter evicted CD Iberia 5-3 on penalties after a 1-all tie.
Player-coach Ian Woodcock (35th) was on target for Celtics
first team who outclassed Ossining Portuguese 4-1 in the Flamhaft
Cup at Pier 40.
Stuart Evans (15th), David Linn (40th) and Michael Thomas (85th)
were the other scorers
Two good cup wins for us, remarked a content Woodcock.
BHOYS BUOYED
At Cardozo High School, Lansdownes reserves beat Jamaica Portuguese
2-0 in the DArpino Cup. They meet Metro Div. Two Eintracht
next.
Brendan Hansbury (25th) and Paul Tierney (55th) buoyed the Bhoys.
Eintracht edged LISFL envoys South Shore 4-3 on penalties after
a 3-3 tie. Fritz Knoll (two) and Andy Reiche scored in regulation.
FREEDOM FIGHTERS
On Long Island, Pancyprian Freedoms came away from Franklin Square
with a 2-0 win courtesy of Qoku and Apostolidis.
LOCUSTS CHECKED
Barnstonworth Rovers seconds swept past Locust Valley (LISFL)
7-3 at Ichan Stadium.
Austin Harris (three), Alfonzo Nanclares (two) and Masharanian Cardozo
connected.
Rovers Metro team, however, came a cropper to New York Wanderers
on Randalls Island. Thomas Hunt, Will Mudge and Mark Toews starred
in Wanderers 3-1 win.
L.I. PASS
Chris Bernic, Frank Savocchi and Leo Russo, who had the assist on
Savocchis goal, handed Long Island United a 3-0 victory over
Central Park Rangers Division Two reserves at Herricks Field.
Our defense was stellar along with goalkeeper Michael Savocchi
who recorded his first shutout of the year, said Frank.
BULGARIA STUNNED
Frosinone stunned FC Bulgaria 4-1 at Elmont Sports Complex.
Meno (two), Guillermo Bahomondez led the Second Division outfit,
with veteran Tim Serpionov chalking Bulgarias consolation.
BROTHERLY ACT
New York Croatia unleashed their lethal combination of the Acquista
and Loncar brothers on South Jamaica and triumphed 5-2.
The Loncars, Filip and Marko, accounted for three goals, with the
latter netting a brace, while Alessandro Acquista and his brother
Fabio had one each.
HAIL CARLOS
Goalie Carlos Hernandez made a dramatic return from injury to stop
three penalties and key Sporting Astorias 4-3 shoot-out win
over the Manhattan Kickers reserves at Grand Street.
He came in in the 80th minute to (give) us a chance,
said Astoria boss Ed Romero. He had been sidelined with a
fracture in his hand suffered two months ago.
The tie had finished 1-1 after regulation with Astorias Greg
Hanffou and Kickers classy John Slover exchanging goals.
UNLUCKY CLARKSTOWN
Goals by John Simone (38th) and Brandon Gilkes (80th) could not
prevent Clarkstown from bowing out 4-2 to Newfield in the DArpino
Cup.
Said Justin Koblish: We had about 10 point blank shots on
their keeper with only two goals -- their keeper was the man of
the match in my mind and the only luck we had was bad luck.
In other DArpino Cup action, Polonia led 1-0 on Peter Paliwodas
opener until the 83rd minute when FC Japan struck late to win 2-1
at McCarren Park.
Kandia triumphed 8-0 in East Brooklyn, Brooklyn Italians beat Korona
Bay Ridge 3-0, United Rocklanders crashed 5-0 to Islip and nine-man
Ukrainians lost 3-0 to West Babylon.
FLAMHAFT CUP
FC Japan, at the foot of the CSL Second Division without a win,
shot the lights out at McCarren Park where they destroyed the Hellenic
Leagues AEK 9-0.
Kenta Hidaka and Shigeru Aoe each had a hat trick with Shinobu Ninomiya,
Ryota Hirose and Max Choa adding one apiece.
OMM OUT
Former CSL side OMM, now in the Eastern District Soccer League (EDSL),
were no match for Ridgewood Romac in a 5-2 shellacking.
Gheorghe Radulescu (17th, 70th), Paul Oprea (40th, 89th) and Marius
Vlad (67th) were the Ridgewood marksmen.
KOSOVA KAYOED
At the Verazzano Complex, Marcin Marke and Slaventij Martinyuk
helped SC Ukrainians dispatch EDSL side Kosova 2-0.
LIBERTY BILL
Manhattan Kickers Nick Bill converted an Ari Dolegoski pass
(10th) for the only goal of the match against Queens Liberty United
at Grand Street.
FURY THROUGH
Kevin Clifford pulled off a miraculous save before Devin Deane slotted
home to hand New York Fury a 5-4 penalty win at Real Caribe.
Furys Dave Pusinsky and KC Coyne were on target in the 2-2
draw after 90 minutes.
Frosinones Flamhaft Cup dream ended in the first round after
they succumbed 3-2 on spot kicks to Stade Breton, this despite goalie
Gustavo Acuna stopping three penalties.
Christin Mendoza scored for Frosinone in the 1-1 regulation draw.
KANDIA FALL
Colin Hemmings Kandia also came up short in a first round
shoot-out with Czechoslovakia at Evander Childs High School. They
lost 4-2 after a
2-2 draw in regulation.
Nineteen-year-old Gavin Monteith (11th) opened the scoring from
long range and after the Czechs had led 2-1, Kemur Henry (78th)
leveled from a curving free kick.
PREMIER SHOW
A cut above their Long Island opponents, Barnstonworth Premier rained
goals on New York Polet at Forest Hills Memorial High School in
a 10-1 rout.
Peter Best (three), Chivon Thornhill, Carl Gajewski, Hernan Paredes,
Ben Weiner, Paul Cann, Lex Lovell and Teddy Eisenman tallied in
the Marth Cup fixture.
SLEEK SILVER
Goalie Andres Canos second minute penalty save kept Silver
Lake on an even keel before they went on to swamp Astoria Friends
6-2 at the Con Edison field.
Goni Lazoja and John Lia both scored twice with Jack LiVigni and
Sal Leanti accounting for the other goals.
Frank DeFrancesco stood out for Silver Lake with three assists,
while Phil Esposito had one.
FIVE-STAR KICKERS
Playing with no more than nine-men throughout, Manhattan Kickers
rode Paul Cowlers hat trick to knock off Five Towns 5-2 in
the Marth Cup.
Jeff La Rue and Brian Salazar were the other scorers.
MIXED RESULTS
The Guyana Veterans franchise enjoyed mixed fortunes in the opening
round of the Marth Cup winning one and losing the other tie.
Guyana A forked out New York Croatia 7-3 at the Verazzano
Complex on strikes by the prolific Chris Giles (two), Melvin Johnson,
Troyland Daniels, Dexter Cort and Junior Walker.
Ante Radalj, Dalibor Kardum and Rob Greton replied in vain for the
Croats, who also conceded an own goal.
At the Parade Ground, however, Guyana B staged a spectacular
collapse against the LISFLs Oceanside.
Up 4-1 with 20 minutes left, the Guyanese gave up three unanswered
goals to allow Oceanside back in the game. Guyana lost 4-2 in the
ensuring shoot-out. Linden Angel (two), Rickland Hutson and Marvin
Hoyte scored in normal time.
SILVER SLIP
Argo Silvers brave fight against Westchester FC came to naught
after a 5-3 penalty loss at the Saxon Wood field in White Plains.
In a back and forth affair, two-goal hero David Kasalo canceled
out Terry Harcourts opener for Silver, then put Westchester
ahead only for Chris Kommatas to force penalties.
Give them lots of credit they played well from the get-go,
said Westchesters Hugo Guaglianone.
CPR WIN
Goals in each half by Creighton Mershon (2nd) and John Bodt (70th)
put Central Park Rangers in the Marth Cup Round of 16 at the expense
of Baldwin.
ROCKY GROUND
John Munnelly scored the Shamrock Over-30s face-saver in a
4-1 loss to Integral Kings in the Marth Cup first round. Eoin Sweeney
had the assist.
