Standings,
results and other stats
The Horse was in fine form again last Sunday with
a neat brace at Francis Lewis High School. But it was the Shkreli
brothers who got the props in CD Iberias 4-1 rout of FC Bulgaria
that put the Spaniards in early contention for the Cosmopolitan
Soccer League First Division (West) title.
Our goals were scored by Steve Nyarady (two), Antonio Trillo
and Vinny Russo, but the story for us was (the) Shkreli brothers,
said Diego Monteagudo, doffing his hat to Luke and Mark.
Luke, 24, played a near perfect game at center back, according to
Monteagudo, while his older brother Mark, 26, was exceptional in
midfield where he set up Nyaradys opening goal.
A hat-trick hero in the 3-0 romp over Pancyrian Freedoms a week
earlier, Nyarady, nicknamed El Caballo (the horse),
nutmegged the Bulgaria goalie moments later for his second putting
Iberia on cruise control.
In the second half, Trillo scored the third and then assisted on
Russos strike before Plamen Mihaylov (85th) converted a face-saving
penalty for Bulgaria, whose reserves lost 2-0.
I had 16 players only (and) most of them from the reserves,
said Bulgaria coach Koko Veltchev in mitigation. Full credit
to CD Iberia -- they are a very good team.
Iberias second win (2-1, 6) put them in a four-way tie with
Pancyprian Freedoms, Barnstonworth Rovers and defending champs Brooklyn
Italians atop the West.
QUICK FIRE
Pancyprian and Rovers put on an early display of pyrotechnics at
St. Johns University that ended in a hard fought 2-1 victory
for the Greek-Cypriots before a hundred fans.
Tasos Polydefkis lit up Rovers with two quick strikes (5th, 14th)
sandwiched between Steve Pugliese brief reply (7th).
Harry Tsagaris assisted on Polydefkis first with a flick-on
from a corner while Halkidis long pass led to the second.
The reserves tied 2-2 with Ron Baskin and Yuri Krym on target for
Rovers.
Extremely high quality matches, noted Rovers coach Stavros
Zomopoulos.
ITALIAN STREAK
Matt Friel, Ed Hayden and Chris Clark put Brooklyn Italians
title defense back on track with goals in the 3-1 defeat of winless
New York Albanians at Tibbets field.
ATLAS CLIMB
In the East, New York Greek-American/Atlas blanked Stal Mielec 3-0
at Cardoza High School to move three points clear on the standings.
Tarik Smith (two) and Ricardo Ordain scripted the win for the Greeks
(2-0-1, 7), whose reserves prevailed 3-1. Waldemar Pyryt netted
for the Stal bench.
POLE-AXED
Gui Stampur headed in a late goal (78th) against Polonia to hand
10-man Lansdowne Bhoys a 1-0 win at Tibbets Field.
Conor Hunter had the assist two minutes before he was ejected for
a second yellow.
One of the better games Ive seen our team play,
said Bhoys president club president Izhar Harpaz
Hard times ahead for our team too many injuries,
moaned Polonia manager Roman Gierczak, who was missing players.
His reserves fared no better, succumbing 2-1 to strikes by Brendan
Hansbury and Blake Limberg. Jacek Lawniczak scored for the Poles.
NYAC WIN
At the Metropolitan Oval, Ian Pilarski and Chris Barsky canceled
out Evan Knights opener for Central Park Rangers to eke out
a 2-1 decision for New York Athletic Club.
It was a hard fought game in which we took a first half lead.
However, NYACs better fitness and aerial prowess finally undid
us in the second half, conceded CPR manager Yuval Lion.
NYACs reserves won 1-0.
MANHATTAN DUEL
Manhattan Kickers saw their early lead on the Second Division log
cut to one point after rallying from two down to tie Manhattan Celtic
2-2 at Pier 40.
Richie Webb (72nd) and David James Stewart (80th) tallied off corners
by Kicker MVP Kevin Norman to peg back goals by George Gyrullis
(35th) and Rob Alexander (55th).
Said Celtic boss Ian Woodcock: All in all the lads played
very well; we had 70 minutes of quality play (but) credit to Kickers,
they dug in and put up a good performance.
The result kept Kickers (2-0-1, 7), whose reserves won 2-0, in first
place -- albeit just a point ahead of a pack that includes New York
Fury, Ukrainians, Frosinone and Koha in that order.
HOT FURY
Fury beat Central Park Rangers 2-0 at Ichan Stadium, this after
the CPR reserves had won 3-2.
THE BROTHERS TANCULA
SC Ukrainians showcased the Tancula brothers, 15 year-old Mateusz
and Marcin, 24, in their two wins over Kandia at Evander Childs
High School.
Mateusz scored from a free kick in the reserves 4-1 romp,
while Marcin struck twice for the first team, 5-2 victors. Slaventij
Mareynyuk, Marcin Trzaska and Adam Maliniak were also on target
for the latter.
FROSINONE MIRACLE
In an early candidate for comeback of the year, Frosinone
fought back from 4-0 down at half time to stun FC Japan 5-4 in a
Second Division tussle at Red Hook.
Kenta Hidaka (10th), Choa Soungfoon (15th), Tosh Tatezawa (25th)
and Choa Sounghoon (35th) had all three points seemingly in the
bag for the Japanese.
However, Jose Aquije (two), Juan Quispe (two) and Cem Dumaukaya
roused Frosinone from its slumber to complete a memorable fight
back.
Frosinones reserves also hit their opponents for five with
none in return. Ariel Sanchez (two), Michael Martocci, Jean Ronald
and Oscar Granados tallied.
RIDGEWOOD TRIUMPH
Ridgewood crushed NIFA 6-1 at Commodore Barry Field for their first
win of the season.
Gheorghe Radulescu (two), Marius Treanchea (two), Radu Calin and
Paul Oprea delivered.
The reserves tied 1-1.
PERFECT CLARKSTOWN
Strikes by sweeper Tom Ralston (75th) and John Simone (80th) maintained
Clarkstowns one hundred percent record in Metro Div. One at
the expense of Mr. Dennehys.
Tim Denmand had the assist on Ralstons effort as Clarkstown
(3-0, 9) stayed three points ahead of Guyana Juniors in the West.
The final ten minutes we packed it in and had some close calls
but came out on top, said Justin Koblish.
This was yet another solid performance, and maybe even an
improvement on past matches. But the goals never came, lamented
Mr. Dennehys Daniel Fallon.
WANDERERS WOBBLE
At the Parade field, Ethan Morris and Peter Czerepak connected for
New York Wanderers in a 4-2 loss to Guyana Juniors.
LI VICTORIOUS
Elsewhere in the West, two goals in the last ten minutes by Long
Island Uniteds Paul Galli and Leo Russo stunned ASA McCarthy
3-1 in a mid-table clash at Grand Street.
McCarthy had converted a penalty on the hour to cancel out Romano
Savocchis first half effort before Galli was released by sweeper
Matt Starrs 50-yard punt.
SPORTING RESULT
In Metro Div. One East, Sporting Astorias Greg Hanffou (23rd)
and Alex Jonassen (71st) saw off Hoboken FC 2-0 at Overpeck County
Park to stay a point behind New York Croatia.
It was more lopsided than the actual score, remarked
Ed Romero, counting a fluffed Hanffou penalty and a Jonassen shot
that hit the post.
Sportings first win of the season kept them a point behind
leaders New York Croatia (2-0-1, 7).
GOTTSCHEE EDGED
Croatia edged BW Gottschee 3-2 at the Aviator Sports Complex after
scoring twice in the opening 15 minutes.
Maiber Polanco (25th) and Cristian Mendoza (70th) replied for Gottschee.
PADDYS DAY
Shamrock, inspired by skipper Paddy Geraghty, topped Korona Bay
Ridge 3-1 on Randalls Island.
Geraghty struck twice after the Irishmen, three points behind Croatia,
had trailed. He also took the free kick from which Sean Barton netted
(67th).
ON THE MARK
Mark Luxama brought his three-match tally to eight goals with a
brace in United Rocklanders 3-0 second half blitz of Barnstonworth
Rovers at Spring Valley High School.
Fritz Bosquet drew first blood for United, now 3-0 (9) atop the
Metro Div. Two East.
SC Eintracht blanked New York Enforcers 3-0 at the Met Oval to climb
into second place (2-1, 6), a point ahead of Zenit who ground out
a goalless tie with FC Partizani at Randalls Island.
ROCKETMAN
Captain Ronnie The Rocket Swinkles four-goal outburst
in a wild 5-3 win over New Yorks Finest at Riverbank State
Park, moved Gotham Argo to within a point of Metro Div. Two West
leaders Pythagoras Samos. The Cops took an early 2-0 lead that was
erased by Swinkles (penalty) and Darran Magoo Cronshaw
before half time. Gotham then fell behind once more before Swinkles
went on a tear with three unanswered goals.
It was a great group effort (that) demonstrated how much heart
this (team) has, said Gothams ecstatic GM Julio Diaz.
Pythagoras (2-0-1, 7) tied 0-0 with Korabi SC in Valley Stream.
GAELS HELD
Joaquin Aviles equalized in the 80th minute to earn EMC a 2-all
tie with ten-man Astoria Gaels at Randalls Island.
Nestor Allen got a double for Gaels, the first pegging back Michael
Strelows opener.
OVER-30 ACTION
In the expanded Over-30 section that now features 24 clubs in two
divisions, SC Eintracht remain on top of the Eastern conference
in Division One despite a goalless tie with Guyana Veterans A
at the Met Oval.
A very good game; both teams had chances no complaints,
summed up John Steigerwald of Eintracht (2-0-1, 7).
SPARKLING SILVER
John Lia (two), Giovanni Cappellini and Mike Bonavita connected
as second place Silver Lake schooled Pele 4-2 at the College of
Staten Island.
Silver (2-1, 6) trail Eintract by a point.
GOTTSCHEE PIPPED
Also in Division One (East), Barnstonworth Rovers pipped BW Gottschee
3-2 at Queens Childrens Hospital on goals by Matt Konar, Gary
Sisto and Patrick Wisnom.
Mike Claverie and Charlie Achinelli twice leveled for Gottschee
but had no answer for Wisnoms eventual winner.
PILE DRIVER
Norman Pile, the Manhattan Kickers veteran also known as the hip-hop
recording artist The Worderer in his other life, piled
in two goals in his sides 5-0 drubbing of ailing Pele Masters
at Grand Street.
Jeffrey Saunders, Paul Cowler and Brian Kimura also connected for
Kickers (3-0, 9) who sit atop the First Division West standings.
BANATUL BEATEN
Howard Beaton (85th) scored the only goal against Banatul at the
Met Oval to keep Guyana Veterans B two points behind
Kickers.
PREMIER CLASS
Third place Barnstonworth Premier, meanwhile, thrashed New York
Dinamo 5-0 to stay in contention.
Paul Cann had the hat trick, while Steve Dex Christopher
and Ben Weiner had one apiece.
OVER-30 DIVISION TWO
Westchester FC reeled in three goals, including two penalties by
Miguel Diaz, but still succumbed 4-3 to East joint leaders Maltese
Dolphins (9) at the Con Edison field. Pablo Diaz was the other Westchester
scorer.
We played well but come (up) short at the end, said
Hugo Guaglianone.
His loss was a bummer after the previous weeks 11-0 trouncing
of RTG, courtesy of George Nunez (two), David Kasolo (three), Laurent
Kettela (two), Peter Owgal, Sean Maher (two) and Pablo Diaz.
RTG were on the wrong end of another shellacking last Sunday
crashing 6-0 to New York Greek-American/Atlas who are level on points
with the Dolphins.
CPR CLINCHER
Creighton Mershons penalty for Central Park Rangers felled
Argo Silver 1-0 at Riverbank State Park. This after Yuval Lion was
fouled after being set up by Mershon.
We were able to hold on for the win with special thanks to
Jim Grandinetti who made a diving save on what looked like a sure
goal, noted
CPRs Andrew Faherty.
Said Argo GM Dana P. Dimon: Argo Silvers result unfortunately
does not represent the great game that they played. They lost 1-0
to a shady penalty kick but certainly dominated the game.
OLD BOYS STRUGGLE
Shamrock Over-30s hammered Barnstonworth Rovers Old Boys 5-1, thanks
to Andys four goals after Masha had drawn first blood.
We struggled to field a strong team, said Old Boys manager
Dave Sheeran, whose James Scooby Rogers scored a face-saver.
METROS WIN AGAIN
Rory Finns GH Metros made it two wins in a row with a 3-0
romp over SC Gjoa. Andy Funes (two) and Alex Yanes were on target.
