Standings,
results and other stats
Ex-Polish Second Division player Bartek Pietrzko notched his
third hat trick of the fall to clinch a dramatic 3-2 win for Polonia
over battling Central Park Rangers at McCarren Park last Sunday.
The undefeated Poles sixth victory saw them pull four points
clear of second Place New York Greek-American/Atlas atop the Cosmopolitan
Soccer League First Division (East) standings after the Greeks were
stunned 4-1 by New York Albanians.
Pietrzko, a 26 year-old striker most recently on the books of Widzew
Lodz in Polands Second Division, had Polonia 2-0 up and in
the driving seat when Kader Zebentout stirred CPR to life with a
quick double.
However, the former pros finishing eventually decided the
game much to CPRs disappointment.
We showed a lot of heart to come back from two down to level
this game, but Polonia's finishing was clinical and at the end of
the day that made the difference, said CPR manager Yuval Lion.
Polonia boss Michael Siwiec was predictably happy with the result
but said there was still a lot of football to be played before the
club could start dreaming of titles.
CPRs reserves won 5-1.
GREEK SHOCKER
A Paul Grafas goal was all Greek-Atlas could muster in a shock 4-1
loss to Albanians at Cardoza High School.
They played well, coach Lucio Russo complimented the
Albanians.
Atlas, whose reserves prevailed 5-0, dropped to 5-2-1 (16), just
a point ahead of third place Pancyprian Freedoms.
JULIO PENALTY
A week after his late penalty had saved Pancyprians bacon
against Barnstonworth, Julio Cesar Santos converted another spot
kick to bail out the misfiring Greek-Cypriots in 1-1 draw with Brooklyn
Italians at the Verrazano Sports Complex.
The normally lethal Brazilian missed an earlier penalty (30th) then
saw Andrea Bellack slot one in five minutes later to put the Italians
ahead.
Pancyprian missed three sitters in the box before Julios 80th
minute equalizer.
Said an irate George Halkidis: In our one loss and the
last two ties, the goal differential should have been two to
three in our favor. We have to, and will, do something about it. As
Pancyprian standards go, this is totally unacceptable.
His reserves gave him something to smile about, winning 3-1.
NYAC MARCH ON
Graham Albert, Ladd Fritz and Giuseppe Incitti lifted New York Athletic
Club past CD Iberia 3-2 at Francis Lewis High School.
Iberia (4-3-1, 13) took the lead through Tony Russo and were level
at one point after the West leaders (6-1-1, 19) conceded an own
goal.
NYAC has a good team and deserved to win. We played carelessly
and our mistakes cost us the game, said David Lago.
ROVERS ROUT
At Ichan Stadium, Steve Pugliese (two), Andy Abramovits and Musa
Shannon routed New York Fury 4-0 to keep second place Barnstonworth
Rovers within shout of NYAC.
No excuses can be made -- we were flat out beat by a better
team. The Rovers strike partnership was lethal and drove our
defense crazy, conceded Furys Spencer Dormitzer.
There was consolation though in the Fury seconds 3-2 success
behind Ra Scopes brace and Dylan Dodd.
BHOYS HELD
Elsewhere in Division One, Lansdowne Bhoys and Manhattan Kickers
ground out a heart-stopping goalless draw at Tibbet Park.
There were numerous goal-line clearances on both ends with the most
dramatic coming on the stroke of full time when Lansdowne defender
Shane ODonnell scrambled a last minute Kickers effort off
the line.
Lansdowne reserves won 2-1.
HOT CELTS
Manhattan Celtic produced a second half explosion to blow out Central
Park Rangers 6-1 at the Metropolitan Oval and claim a share of the
Division Two leadership.
Michael Thomas (5th), Freddy Esiakoh (50th), David Linn (55th),
Barry OConnell (65th), Ed McPherson (72nd) and Keith Doyle
(85th) scripted Celtics third straight win.
Mike Sieman was the CPR scorer.
The boys played well, Celtic coach Ian Woodcock summed
up after his lads joined first place FC Bulgaria on the 16-point
mark.
The CPR reserves lost 2-0.
STAL-MATE
Bulgaria and Stal Mielec tied 0-0 in their top-of-the-table clash
at McCarren Park.
Mielec missed an 85th minute penalty in a defensive battle and came
off worse as they dropped to putative third place (15), a point
behind the two frontrunners.
SKID ENDS
Goals against Kandia in either half by Kenta Hidaka (25th) and Shinobu
Ninomiya (60th) enabled FC Japan to end a two-game skid.
We hope to get back to a winning streak again to hang on to
the top of (the) Division Two table toward the end of the fall season,
said Japan GM Tosh Tatezawa.
Kandia reversed the 2-0 scoreline in the reserve fixture at Herbert
Lehman High School.
NIKAJ ENCORE
Mensur Nikaj followed up his three-goal outburst against CPR the
previous week with a double (35th, 70th) as Koha downed NIFA 2-1
at Erasmus High School.
Kohas reserves netted the only goal in the curtain-raiser.
Also in Division Two, Derek McKenna was on target for Astoria Gaels
in a 1-all tie with Banatul at the Met Oval.
Gaels reserves triumphed 1-0.
METRO DIV. I
SC Ukrainians beat Ridgewood Romac 2-0 at Randalls Island to cut
idle BW Gottschees lead in the West to two points.
Adam Maliniak (8th pen.) and Daniel Aragon (65th) connected for
Ukrainians (5-1-1, 16), in what victorious coach Steve Kovalenko
described as a very tough game.
SPORTING WIN
Gerry Fahey, Patricio Acosta, Patria Prakasa and Christian
Tapia tallied in Sporting Astorias 4-0 thrashing of Hoboken
FC 1912 at Long Island City High School that kept the winners in
contention for the title.
Sporting (4-3, 12) are third in the West, four points off the mark.
SHAMROCKED
Andy Horan and Cairan Moloney both hit hat tricks in Shamrocks
11-0 annihilation of Metro Div. 1 (East) stragglers
Homenetmen at Commodore Barry Field.
Paddy Geraghty added a brace to bring his two-match tally to five;
Steve Douglas also had two, while Donal Kelly chipped in with one
goal.
Credit to Homenetmen. They didnt give up, coach
Walsh complimented the Armenians.
East pace-setters Guyana Juniors (4-0-3, 15) knocked off New York
City Infinity All-Stars 3-1, while number two Clarkstown (4-2-1,
13) trounced ASA McCarthy 6-1.
RUSSELL STAR
Long Island Uniteds amazing maiden season in the Cosmopolitan
Soccer League continued Sunday when Russell Star scored the only
goal of the match against Barnstonworth Rovers at Herricks Field
to preserve the Metro Div. II leaders hundred percent record.
Jason Sardis had the assist while goalie Michael Savocchi recorded
his fourth clean sheet.
A tough, hard fought game. We missed many opportunities,
said Frank Savocchi.
United improved to 8-0 (24), five points ahead of Frosinone Met
Oval FC who defeated Athletiko FC 4-2.
RONNIE WINNER
Ronnie Swinkles, assisted by CP Devera, handed Gotham Argo a 1-0
decision over Zenit FC.
Gotham (5-2) are fourth in the 17-team Metro Div. II, nine points
behind Long Island.
OMM EDGE
OMM, middle-of-the-table in Metro Div. II, edged Turkish American
SC 4-3 at Dimeola Field, courtesy of Dan Winters, Keoma Nascimento,
Anthony Piteo, and Tomasz Majkut.
In other results, Waldemar Pyrts brace secured second-from-the-
bottom New York Wanderers a 2-2 draw with New York Enforcers; SC
Eintracht crashed 3-0 to NYs Finest FC; Korona Bay Ridge hammered
Mr. Dennehys 4-0 and New York Croatia topped EMC 4-1.
PELE TIE
After seeing their first team engage in several high scoring thrillers
in recent weeks, Shamrocks Over-30s got into the act as well,
twice coming from behind to tie Pele Masters 4-4 at Commodore Barry
Field.
Niall Carolan, John Guildea (two) and Ozzie Adelmio scored for the
Irishmen, while Lindon Layne and Ronald Clarke had two goals apiece
for the Guyanese.
EINTRACHT LEE-WAY
SC Eintracht could afford to miss a penalty and still win 1-0 against
GH Metros in an Over-30 fixture.
Joshua Lee (80th) struck off a Torsten Holmes pass; this after
Anthony Alessandro had fluffed a PK (70th).
A CLASS
Guyana Veterans B outshone sister club Guyana Veterans
A on the day with a 5-1 drubbing of New York Croatia
at the Seaview Ground.
Rickland Hutson (two), Junior Walker, Delon Thom and Wendell James
were the marksmen.
Guyana A had a goal from Junior George in a 1-all
tie with Barnstonworth Rovers.
ROVERS DERBY
Narces Phanor decided the local derby between Barnstonworth
Old Boys and Barnstonworth Premier in the latters favor at
Forest Hills High School.
Dave Sheeran accepted blame for his sides 1-0 defeat:
The Old Boys undoubtedly deserved at least a tie -- as confirmed
by Premier coach Chivon Thornhill afterwards -- but a costly error
on my part denied them any points, and for that I apologize to my
squad.
WAY TO GO!
CSL Rookies Argo Silver recorded the first win ever, a 3-1 result
over SC Gjoa at Chelsea Pier 40 in which Najib Majaj, John McConville
and Jason Cyrus made history.
POWER MIKE
Mike Giacabbone struck off a Mario Mercado assist ten minutes from
time to kill off Maltese Dolphin and complete his double in a 3-2
BW Gottschee victory at Queens Childrens Hospital.
Down 1-0 at the half, Gottschee rallied back through Bruno Zappavigna
(55th), who leveled with a bicycle kick, and Giacabbones brace
(60th, 80th).
Greek-Atlas were also 1-0 winners over Westchester FC, thanks to
Nick Kokosis.
