Standings, results and other stats

Goalkeeper Didi Martinez denied ex-MetroStar defender Steve Jolley from the penalty spot to keep New York Athletic Club off the scoreboard in Pancyprian Freedoms’ 4-0 romp at St. Johns University last Sunday.
Didi pulled off the save against Jolley -- whose Major League Soccer career also included stints with the LA Galaxy and the Dallas Burn – early in the second half with Pancyprian up 3-0.

The Greek-Cypriots got off to their usual whirlwind start, the prolific Chris Megaloudis shaking the net after ten minutes, followed, predictably, by Julio Cesar Santos (20th) and Stelios Andreou (35th). Julio added a second in the 80th.
With second place CD Iberia crashing 2-1 to Central Park Rangers, Pancyprian (6-1, 18) pulled five points clear atop the Cosmopolitan Soccer League (CSL) First Division (West) standings.
“Great win on our part despite missing five regulars,” said George Halkidis. “Both teams were very good but we made our chances count.”

NYAC forward Hussein Nasreddin agreed with Halkidis’ assessment.
“We were (also) missing a few key players but simply put, they finished all their chances,” he said.
NYAC (2-3-1 (7) dropped into a three-way tie for third place in the East. Pancyprian were scheduled to play Olympic 78 in the US Open Cup at the Verazzano Sports Complex in midweek.

RESERVE TUSSLE
As they say in boxing, “someone’s ‘0’ had to go” in the battle of undefeated reserve teams between NYAC and Pancyprian at St. Johns.
The visitors sprinted into a 2-0 lead before Ejon Qoku’s late trey (70th, 78th, 85th) nicked it for Pancyprian, now 5-0-2 (17) on top of the West.
NYAC, second in the East, slipped to 5-5-1 (16).

CD SHOCKER
Danny D’Angleo and Adam Shindler scripted Central Park Rangers’ 2-1 stunner at the Metropolitan Oval, and this after Iberia had led 1-0.
Iberian ace Steve Nyarady set up Antonio Trillo for the ice-breaker, but a goal in each half earned Yuval Lion’s hungry Rangers full points.

“CPR simply wanted it more than us and outworked us. Good win for them, tough loss for us,” conceded Diego Monteagudo, whose men spurned a flurry of late chances, including a Trillo effort off the bar.
Said Lion: “The result was especially gratifying since we started the game with no recognized strikers against the in-form CSL team.”
In the curtain-raiser, Tony DeLorenzo, Cheick Traore and Jimmy Smyth gave CPR a 3-1 victory.

CHAMPS FALL
Tarik Smith (39th), off a Marcel Nayasi assist, consigned CSL champs Brooklyn Stars to a 1-0 defeat against New York Greek-American/Atlas at Verazzano.
Atlas (4-1-2, 14) top the East, a point ahead of CPR.
The Greek reserves won 4-0.

POLE POSITION
Polonia, last season’s runners-up, hammered New York Albanians 3-0 at McCarren Park for just their second win in seven tries.
Lukasz Poduszczak (47th) drove in a rebound from a 22-yard Lukasz Zajac free kick for the club’s first goal in five matches.
Zajac made it 2-0 three minutes later and after watching his teammates miss a handful of chances, substitute Mariusz Kulesza sealed it (84th).

“Polonia controlled the game and Albanians (should) be happy it was only 3-0. If we score on only half of our chances the final result could have been seven or eight nothing,” manager Roman Gierczak boasted.
The Poles’ Marcin Podbielski had the only goal in the reserve fixture.

STAL-MATE
Miroslaw Sielczak scored in the last minute to complete Stal Mielec’s remarkable comeback in a 2-2 tie with FC Bulgaria at Francis Lewis High School.
Bulgaria’s Stefan Dimitrov (30th, 40th) had the Poles in a 2-0 hole before Seweryn Grzywna and then Sielczak pulled Stal even in the first meeting in the top flight between the two promotion sides.
“We played better but what is on the (scoreboard) counts, so we lost points,” rued Bulgaria coach Koko Veltchev.
Stal’s reserves run riot in a 6-1 romp, courtesy of Waldemar Pyryt (four), Pawel Sokolowski and Krzysztof Piwnik.

ROVERS DRAW
Only the reserves played at Ichan Stadium where Barnstonworth Rovers and Lansdowne Bhoys tied 2-2.
Dan McNulty and Kevin McGeeney were the Irish scorers while
Alfonso and Michael Alexander tallied for Rovers.

FURY DAMPENED
Rich Webb scored once and set up two goals as Division Two leaders Manhattan Kickers knocked off their nearest rivals, New York Fury, 3-0 at Grand Street.
Webb broke a half time deadlock with a lighting free kick (55th) followed by assists on strikes by David Taylor (62nd) and Elliot Brook (90th).
Kickers improved to 5-0-1 (16), three points ahead of Fury.
Kickers’ reserves prevailed 4-0 on goals by Stu Kaiser, Goreliegh Willis and Gilad Bloom.

CELTIC DOUBLE
Manhattan Celtic (4-1-1, 13) reclaimed a share of second spot in Division Two after edging Central Park Rangers 2-1 at Pier 40.
Freddie Estiakoh (70th) clinched it after CPR had pegged back Stuart Evans’ first half strike (35th).
“CPR put up a good show but we eventually wore them down,” said coach Ian Woodcock, whose men are level with Fury and Frosinone on 13 points.
Barry O’Connell gave the Celtic reserves’ a 1-0 decision.

TUDOR STYLE
Ridgewood forward Nitu Tudor had a brace in his club’s 3-all tie with Ukrainians at Evander Childs High School.
Stefan Cocea opened the scoring for the Romanians, while Bartek Kamionka, Marcin Marek (pen.) and Adam Maliniak replied for Ukrainians.
“We kept coming back,” said Ukrainian coach Steve Kovalenko, while offering props to his goalie Piotr Brzezinski, who also played in the reserves’ 2-0 loss.

THE SHIRVILLE SHOW
In the evening game at Evander Childs, Antiguan defender Shirville Jarvis was on fire in Kandia’s Caribbean derby with NIFA won 2-0 by the Jamaicans.
Jarvis, who’s 23, got the show going in the reserve match, moving into midfield to notch a first half hat trick in Kandia’s 6-1 rout of the Haitians.
He was pulled off at the interval and reintroduced in the second half of the goalless senior fixture. The 23 year-old responded with a brace (55th, 80th) to end the day with five goals.
Kandia coach Colin Hemmings also lauded shot-stopper O’Malley Francis, a “20 year-old phenom,” for playing with a migraine headache.

JAPAN RELIEF
“Finally, a long awaited ‘W!’”
That was FC Japan GM Tosh Tatezawa’s reaction after his bottom side ended a run of five defeats in Division Two by stunning Koha 3-1 at Commodore Barry.
Kenta Hidaka (53rd), Kimihiro Obata (60th) and Kenta Hidaka (65th) produced Japan’s first win. Mensur Nikaj replied for Koha.
“We fought with a tight defense in the first half and in the second half
our offense took off to blast three perfect goals, including two ‘picture-moment’ beautiful headers,” Tatezawa beamed.

METRO ONE
Undefeated New York Croatia’s runaway lead in the East is now eight points after a 4-1 win over Long Island United at Herricks High School.
Marko Loncar (20th, 78th), Steve Demaio (30th) and Alessandro Acquista (85th) scored for the 6-0-1 (19) Croats.
Joe Imbrgno, assisted by Paul Galli, had the United goal.

SHAMROCK SHOOT-OUT
Shamrock skipper Paddy Geraghty set up all the Irishmen’s goals, including Shane Gallagher’s last gasp equalizer, in an enthralling 5-5 draw with Guyana Juniors at the Parade Grounds.
Geraghty and Co. twice overcame two-goal deficits but when Guyana went ahead 5-4 in the 88th minute it seemed curtains for Shamrock until Gallagher fired in the leveler.
Gallagher had a brace, while Mario Angelucci, Shawn Baron (70th) and Sean Kelly (85th) had one each.
Shamrock (3-1-2, 11) are second to Croatia.

BROWN SHINES
Guyana’s tie enabled West leaders Clarkstown (6-1, 18) to open up a five-point gap over the Caribbean club after trouncing Sporting Astoria 6-3 in Rockland County.
Andre Brown struck four times.
“We gave up four goals in the first half and that was the difference. We fought back and scored three consecutive goals in the first 20 minutes of the second to get back into it but it wasn’t enough,” Astoria’s Ed Romero lamented.

DENNEHY’S DEIGHT
Andy Sole, Bobby Brennan and two-goal hero Gerry Smith were on target for Mr. Dennehy’s who held off Korona Bay Ridge 4-2 at Ferris High School.
The victors (3-1-2, 11) climbed one rung up the Metro Div. One (West) ladder to third place.
“We’ve played consistently well for most of the season and are now getting the rewards with three wins on the trot,” said Dennehy’s Dan Fallon.

METRO TWO
Jeff Durosier (88th) salvaged a vital point for East frontrunners United Rocklanders in a 1-1draw with Pythagoras Samos at Spring Valley High School.
Durosier headed in a Marc Luxama rebound following a sweeping move that included touches by Max Louis and Fritz Bosquet.
“The team once again stuck by each other and never gave up,” said Bosquet, singling out defender Dany Ridore for Man of the Match honors.

EMC TREBLE
Second place SC Eintracht succumbed 3-0 to EMC at Met Oval, falling three points behind Rocklanders (12) in the process.
Michael Strelow (two) and Yadh Yaich starred for EMC.

ARGO AGONY
Shorthanded Argo Silver lost captain Marcello Chi to an ankle injury in the first half and then the game, 2-1, to Odyssey FC, a team of mostly former Argo players, at Pier 40.
Peter Creedon had Argo level at one point before Gavin Moore grabbed Odyssey’s winner from the penalty spot.

GAELS OUSTED
In a delayed D’Arpino Cup first round tie at Commodore Barry field, Nestor Allen scored for Astoria Gaels in a 4-1 defeat by the Koha reserves.
Alexander DaSilva (two), Emir Aliaj and Mavic tallied for Koha.

HOBOKEN, TOO
Hoboken FC missed a second half penalty in a 2-1 loss to Istanbul SC in the New Jersey State Cup.
Kerry Hall (25th) was on target for the CSL Metro Div. One side.

OVER-30
Thomas Haselmann and Bundy Doczy saw off Silver Lake 2-1 at the Met Oval to keep Eintracht unbeaten on the First Division (East) standings (5-0-2, 17).
Phil Esposito had the assist on Anthony D’Egidio’s strike for Silver.
“Our defense played a good game,” said Eintracht boss John Steigerwald.
Eintracht’s closest pursuers, Barnstonworth Rovers (3-3, 9), pummeled Guyana Veterans ‘B’ 5-2 at Forest Hills High School, with Linden Angel and Rickland Hutson on target for the Guyanese.

MIGHTY KICKERS
Jeff Saunders and Pete Navarte led rampaging West pace-setters Manhattan Kickers to a 5-1 victory over Guyana Veterans ‘A’ at the Parade Grounds.
Chris Giles got Guyana’s face-saver.

TURKEY SHOOT
Kickers (6-1, 18) stayed four points clear of Barnstonworth Premier who met Pele in a turkey shoot at Forest Hills High.
When the smoke had cleared, unbeaten Premier (4-0-2, 14) had put ten past the Guyanese without conceding any.
Martin Viklund and Anders Moberg both had a hat trick, Peter Best added two and Lex Lovell and Hernan Paredes each had a goal.
At Queens Children’s Hospital, Pele Masters salvaged some pride for the Over-30 section’s Guyanese contingent by blanking BW Gottschee 2-0.

ATLAS WAY
New York Greek-American/Atlas are now 7-0 atop the Second Division (East) log after thumping New York Croatia 4-0 at Cardozo High School.
Steve Papadopopulos (two), Stelios Stylianou and Pete Papanikolaou upped the Greeks’ point tally to 21.
At the Con Ed field, Gordon Whiteside had Barnstonworth Rovers Old Boys’ only goal in a 4-1 drubbing by second place Maltese Dolphins (4-2, 12).
“We failed to come to terms with what must be one of the worst fields in New York City and allowed ourselves to be muscled out of the game,” moaned Rovers official Dave Sheeran.

OMAR WINNER
Omar Escobar’s 20-yard free kick earned GH Metros a 2-1 win over Westchester FC with five minutes to spare.
Andy Funez was the other Metros marksman.
“A heart-breaker,” cried Hugo Guaglianone. “With five minutes left they scored on a direct kick.”

SKID ENDS
Shamrock, meanwhile, tied 1-all with Central Park Rangers at Riverbank State Park to end a four-game losing streak.
CPR’s Diego Rivera (30th) canceled out Turkish striker Onder Koksol’s opener for the Rocks (20th).

GIO HONORED
Greek-Atlas’ Giovanni Savarese, a classy pro for several years in MLS, Europe and his native Venezuela, will be inducted into the United Soccer League’s (USL) Hall of Fame in Tampa, November 18.
The Red Bull/MetroStars all-time leading scorer until this year, Savarese rose to prominence when he led the Long Island Rough Riders to the 1995 USL Second Division championship.
