results and other stats
Player-coach
Yuval Lion scored in the Central Park Rangers White teams
last game of the season last Sunday, a 3-1 defeat by NIFA at the Metropolitan
Oval that hardly dampened their glee at clinching the Second Division
crown.
CPR went 11-3-1 (34) for the season and although Banatul (10-4-1, 31)
can match their points tally if they win their remaining fixture against
NIFA this weekend, the Serbs would have to do so by a 46-goal margin to
deny them the title.
CPR return to the First Division a year after dropping to the Second,
where the club formed a sister side CPR Red.
Both CPR Red and White had successful seasons in Division Two, even
if the Reds came up a few points short of second place, were proud
of them all and their hard work, said the clubs Andrew Faherty.
CPR, who had played out a goalless tie with Astoria Gaels at the Met Oval
earlier Sunday, are third on the log (7-4-4, 25) with a game to play.
The CPR White and NIFA reserve tussle ended 1-1.
FIGHTING
IRISH
Fighting
relegation, Manhattan Celtic blanked Koha 3-0 at the Verrazano Sports
Complex to move two points clear of the drop zone in the Second Division.
Keith
Doyle got his side going with a 20th minute penalty after Anthony Campbell
was upended in the box.
In the second half, goals by Campbell (60th) and Michael Thomas (85th)
iced Celtic's fifth victory of the season (5-5-4, 19).
An
important win for us. We've got two games left and need to win them (both),"
said coach Ian Woodcock.
The
first of the two crunch fixtures is against fellow relegation candidates
FC Japan this Sunday. A point behind Celtic, Japan (5-6-3, 18) picked
up free points from last place Roosevelt Island International at the weekend.
Celtic's
other match is scheduled for June 25 against NIFA.
RESERVE
FORCE
Campbell was also on target for Celtic's reserves in a come-from-behind
3-3 tie with Koha who led 3-1 ten minutes from full time.
Ed McPherson and Andres Vacarazza were the other Celtic marksmen, while
Narim Lulanaj bagged all three Koha goals.
Ironically, while their first team struggles for survival in the Second
Division, Celtic's seconds (11-1-3, 36) have a good shot at clinching
the Reserve title.
"If they'd won (against Koha) they'd won the Reserve championship,"
Woodcock pointed out.
Central Park Rangers 'Red' (12-3-1, 37) ended their season in first place
after Astoria Gaels' reserves forfeited last Sunday, but Celtics can still
claim the title by beating NIFA on June 25.
"A good team effort all round. I've been playing a lot of the lads
for both games," said Woodock, lauding both squads.
McCARTHY EDGED
Jon Davidson struck for Metro Div. 1 ASA McCarthy in a 2-1 loss to second
place Ridgewood Romac at Wards Island that confirmed the club's slide
to Metro Div. 2
Jimmy Radulescu (30th) and Marius Treanchea (79th) claimed full points
for the Romanians.
SCORING SPREE
Victor Florez hit a hat trick, while Germann Florez and Raul Rodriguez
both struck twice in BW Gottschees 9-1 annihilation of Homenetmen
in a Metro Div. 1 match at Queens Childrens Hospital.
Pablo Lacruz and George Gonzalez accounted for the other goals.
Steve Hazarian (88th) netted a late face-saver for the Armenians.
When they show up I can beat any team, but when they dont
I cant do anything, said Homenetmen coach Garo Anastasian
who was missing six starters.
The defeat snapped a two-game winning streak for Homenetmen, wholl
finish the season third from the bottom (4-11-1, 13).
TAMEF TAMED
Metro Div. II OMM United knocked off Turkish side TAMEF SC 4-1 at Veterans
Memorial Park on goals by
Marcos Narscimentos, Alfredo Jose and Leo Qulli (two).
OVER-30s
At Randalls Island, Joel Wickhams notched a brace in Pele Masters
4-0 win over SC Gjoa.Glendon George and Dexter Deterville also scored.
