Standings, results and other stats

Striker Steve Nyarady, nicknamed “El Caballo” (the horse) by his CD Iberia mates, showed his thoroughbred qualities against Cosmopolitan Soccer League giants Pancyprian Freedoms last Sunday to devastating effect.

A week after his side was crushed 5-1 by Barnstonworth Rovers, Nyarady scored a memorable hat trick for the mercurial Iberians in a 3-0 romp at Francis Lewis High School.

The 25 year-old pulled off a smash and grab job against a top class side whose star studded forward line, led by Julio Cesar Santos, could not find a way past Iberia goalie Kartzman.

“Pancyprians are a very good team and we played them well and managed to get a great result by finishing our chances,” Diego Monteagudo pointed out.

Pancyprian GM Lefteris Eliades concurred, noting that finishing was the difference in a sometimes one-sided game.
The turning point of the match highlighted the profligacy that would cost the Greek-Cypriots dearly. It came barely 15 minutes into the tussle when the normally clinical Santos missed a penalty.

The five-time CSL champs were duly punished midway through the half when Nyarady scored with the help of Chiki Vazquez.
Iberia weathered some intense Pancyprian pressure, including a shot that center half Luke Shkreli headed off the line, before Nyarady struck twice on the break in the second half to seal the win. Vinny Russo had the assist on the third.

“It was a hard fought win, the Freedom always have a good team,” said Monteagudo, giving props to Kartzman.
In addition to his team’s poor marksmanship, Eliades also blamed the narrow field at Francis Lewis for the result but promised that Pancyprian, who demolished defending champs Brooklyn Italians 4-0 in their opener, would be back.
“It’s one of those games. We played good and hope to bounce back,” he remarked.

Iberia’s reserves, 3-2 victors over Barnstonworth the previous week, were held to a 3-3 tie by Pancyprian’s second team.

BARNSTORMING ROVERS
In Week One it was new boy Jordan Chirico rattling in four goals in Barnstonworth Rovers’ 5-1 annihilation of Iberia. Last Sunday it was old hand Steve Pugliese with a hat trick in another 5-1 Rovers romp at Ichan Stadium -- over New York Albanians this time.
Colin Marshall got the other two for the early First Division (West) leaders.
Albanians’ reserves forfeited.

CHAMPS SURVIVE
Brooklyn Italians blew a two-goal lead against FC Bulgaria but recovered to win 4-2 at the Verazzano Sports Complex.
Plamen Mihaylov and Stefan Dimitrov brought the promotion side back from the brink only for the champions, who tallied through Damion Cyrus (two), Amir Alyev and Ed Hayden to break away.
The Italians took the curtain-raiser 6-1.

CPR EDGE
Camilo Padilla and Kadi Zebentout clinched full points for Central Park Rangers with a 2-1 decision over Lansdowne Bhoys at the Metropolitan Oval.
Jason Wagner was the Lansdowne scorer.
Said CPR manager Yuval Lion: “We controlled the game for long periods and could have had a more comprehensive win against a team who play with a lot of heart.”
Lion got on the score sheet, along with Lars Berg, Marc Cheesman, Dave Lovercheck, Tony DeLorenzo and Dan Cohen in the CPR reserves’ 6-0 shutout.

STALLED
New York Athletic Club pegged back 10-man Stal Mielec to earn a 2-all draw at the Aviator Sports Complex.
Robert Brozyna and Miroslaw Sielczak, two of six former Polonia players in the Mielec side, connected before NYAC rallied back.
“It’s kind of disappointing,” lamented Artur Kurasiewicz. “However, we had to play most of the second half with 10 men, so the score is pretty much justified.”
NYAC’s reserves won 5-0.

POLISH TIE

Elsewhere in Division One, giants New York Greek-American/Atlas and Polonia drew 0-0 at Cardoza High School.
“Greek-American had more chances to win the game especially in the first half,” conceded Polonia manager Roman Gierczak, bestowing MVP honors on his shot-stopper Kamil Wilk with a nod to defender Tomek Groch.
Polonia club president Michael Siwiec scored in his reserves’ 2-1 loss.

FURY DOUBLE
KC Coyne and Jon Hemmert connected for Second Division New York Fury who downed FC Japan 2-1 at Red Hook.
“We lost to a quality team, but we gained confidence to have been competitive against a team that played in the First Division last year,” said Japan manager Tosh Tatezawa.
James Steidel (two), Eric Ewald, Gerry Lepkonski, Ian Hirschfield and Steve Whitaker tallied for the Fury reserves in a 6-2 rout.

CAMPBELL TREY
Cleve Campbell’s hat trick in a 3-2 Kandia thriller at Evander Childs High School kept Ridgewood Romac winless in Division Two.
The two teams were deadlocked 2-2, on a brace apiece by Campbell and Gheorghe Radulescu, when the 21 year-old nicked it three minutes from time.
“Our youthful exuberance prevailed against an older team,” Kandia’s Colin Hemmings summed up.
Ridgewood’s reserves crashed 5-0. FROSINONE WIN
Frosinone Met Oval’s first win in Division Two came at the expense of Central Park Rangers who were beaten 3-1 at Elmont Sports Complex.

Aqije Jose, Eddy Rivaplata and Nick Sadirick scored following a goalless affair in the curtain-raiser.
In other Second Division action, Adam Maliniak’s (70th) converted a penalty for S.C. Ukrainian in a 3-1 loss to joint leaders Koha at Verazzano.
Koha’s reserves won 3-2.

Manhattan Kickers, level with Koha on six points, thrashed NIFA 5-1 after their second team had trounced NIFA’s bench players 5-0.

HALLMARK MOMENT

New signing Kerry Hall fired Hoboken FC to a 4-2 win over Shamrock at Overpeck Park to put the hitherto perennial stragglers joint top in Metro Div. One.
Hall hit a hat trick (9th, 69th, 75th) to kill off the feisty Irish after skipper Neal Ventola (4th) had drawn first blood. Mario Auglucci (47th) and Andy Horan (73rd) scored for Shamrock.
Hoboken joined New York Croatia, who held off Korona Bay Ridge 5-3, on the four-point mark.

DENNEHY’S DRAW

Second half goals by Tim Wyand and Scott Cappuzzo, as well as some brilliant goalkeeping by Man of the Match Andrew Cohen, earned ASA McCarthy a 2-all draw with Mr. Dennehy’s at Ferris High School.
Kevin Shaw assisted on both Dennehy’s goals, struck by JP Loize and Bobby Brennan.
“Another disappointing draw in game we could have and should have won,” rued Dennehy’s Daniel Fallon.

SPORTING TIE
Sporting Astoria and BW Gottschee produced eight goals at Queens Children’s Hospital in a 4-4 tie.
Ibra Radyn, Chris Tapia and Greg Hanffou tallied for Sporting.

L.I. SLIP
Invincible for most of last season, Long Island United were left searching for their first win in Metro Div. One after succumbing 3-2 to Guyana Juniors at Herricks High School.
Ryan Kitzen (10th) shot United ahead, but Guyana banged in three answered goals before Paul Galli slid in a pass from Frank Savocchi.

“We had many opportunities on offense but could not finish,” said Savocchi.
At Kennedy/Zukor Field, goals by Peter Czerepak and Robinson Howard could not prevent a 4-2 loss to Clarkstown by 10-man New York Wanderers

PARTISAN EFFORT

FC Partizani played catch-up with Barnstonworth Rovers in Metro Div. Two before settling for a 3-3 draw at Randalls Island.
Elsen Kodra briefly tied the game at 1-all before Pirro Cece scored twice (80th, 83rd) off assists by Alban Dizdari to bring Partizani from 3-1 down.

GOTHAM STARS
Darran “Magoo” Cronshaw and Mark Eisenacher handed Gotham Argos a 2-1 win over SC Korabi at the Greenbelt Recreation Center
Field on Staten Island.
“Everyone worked very hard for it -- especially Jason in goal and our entire defense did an awesome job,” said Gotham’s excited skipper Ronnie “The Rocket” Swinkels.
GM Julio Diaz credited new signing Colin “CiCi” Christopher for shoring up the defense and awarded man of the match honors to Lucas “Skywalker” Cunningham.

GERRY O’GOAL

Veteran striker Gerry O’Brien brought his seven-day tally in Metro Div. Two to four goals with a hat trick in Astoria Gaels’ 3-2 decision over New York’s Finest at Flushing Meadows.

EINTRACHT ROCKED
Bate Ning and Sean Blarney scored for Eintracht in a 5-2 shellacking by United Rocklanders at Spring Valley High School.
“They’re a pretty strong team,” observed Eintracht coach Wolfgang Radermacher.

FINN’S DELIGHT

Much to the delight of their indefatigable coach, Rory Finn, GH Metros blew out newcomers Odyssey FC in an Over-30 tussle at Riverside State Bank.
Dennis Reyes (two), Nelson Garcia, Javier and Jose Lopez did Finn proud.

FIVE-STAR EINTRACHT

SC Eintracht also hit Silver Lake for five on Staten Island, thanks to Scott Sucher (20th) Tommy Strumpf (55th), Mike Neubuaer (70th), Thomas Hanselmann (80th) and Fernando Villegas (85th).

GUYANA SWEEP
The Guyana Veterans franchise enjoyed a clean sweep at the weekend with the ‘B’ side blanking countrymen Pele Masters 2-0 and the ‘A’ team outgunning Barnstonworth Rovers 6-3, both at the Parade Ground.

Raymond Floyd and Nigel Allen scored for Guyana ‘B’ while Kester Darlington (three), Peter Hinds (two) and Chris Giles starred for Guyana ‘A.’

PELE WOE
BW Gottschee, meanwhile, completed a miserable weekend for the Pele organization by drubbing their new Over-30 team 4-0 at Queens Children’s Hospital.
Bruno Zappavigna (30th), Mike Giacobone (60th, 70th) and Charlie Achinelli (80th) saw off the rookies. George Silva kept a clean sheet.

ROCK SLIDE

Under-strength Shamrock conceded a last minute goal in a 3-2 loss to SC Gjoa at Dyker Field.
Danny Krygier (two) snatched full points for Gjoa, whose Andrew Barber was also on target.

SILVER FALL
Thierry Debaille (65th) hit Argo Silver’s consolation in a 3-1 defeat to New York Greek-American/Atlas at Cardoza High School.

OH, BOY
At Floyd Bennett Field, Barnstonworth Rovers Old Boys dropped a heart-breaking 2-1 decision to New York Croatia in the last minute.
Brian McLaughlin was the Rovers marksman.
“We’re playing well, I just need to get more than 11 players to show up at one time so we can compete for the entire 90 minutes,” said Dave Sheeran.

Later at Floyd Bennett, Nedgy Nazon earned Barnstonworth Premier a 1-1 tie with Banatul.
Maltese Dolphins sank Central Park Rangers 4-0 at the Con Edison field.
