Born
in St. Asaph, North Wales in 1957, Soccer loving Nick Oldham was
brought up on a diet of George Best, Bobby Charlton and Denis Law
of Manchester United fame during their halcyon days of the mid to
late 60s.
Nick studied Art and Design at Connahs Quay College of Art, before
leaving North Wales for the bright lights of London in 1974.
He then worked in many art studios until settling back in the North
West with childhood sweetheart, Lynne and his 2 young sons, in the
Cheshire milltown of Macclesfield, where he still works by day,
in advertising.
By the time his older son, Philip, was 7 years old, Nick had virtually
given up drawing and painting as he was permanently busy working
as many hours as he could to support his young family.
It was at that point, when wondering what to give his son for his
birthday that he decided to pick up his brushes and paint a watercolour
of his sons favourite Soccer player, Eric Cantona, knowing
that, through a work colleague, he could get the painting signed
by Cantona himself.
The portrait hung with pride in Philips bedroom for many years.
With his love of art re-ignited, Nick decided to paint many of his
idols, past and present for his own pleasure. Cheshire Life magazine
featured much of his work from 1999 onwards and MUTV Childrens Programme,
Reds@Five also invited him on their show on several occasions to
demonstrate to young fans in the audience how to get started on
producing their own portraits of their favorite players.
From there, things snowballed, resulting in an exhibition at the
Blyth Gallery in Manchester in 2002, Seeing Red, a 3 man exhibition
of Manchester United artworks produced by the fans themselves.
The exhibition was well received and covered by MUTV and various
newspapers.
Nick caricatures regularly for many Life magazines in the UK, particularly
for their popular Rich Lists, which feature the Top
100 millionaires in each county.
The number of Life magazines has grown from Cheshire Life to Labcashire,
Yorkshire, Essex, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire Life magazines.
Football clubs Reading, Sheffield United, Blackpool and Southampton
have all commissioned Team caricatures and an England World Cup
2006 squad was independently commissioned.
Cardtoon Creations are a company producing Greetings Cards and Cigarette
Cards among other things, who constantly use Nicks caricatures
on their products, samples can be viewed at: www.cardsgifts.co.uk
Influenced by Van Gogh, Nick has recently created a tribute to George
Best in a Van Gogh style and intends to add other subjects to
this particular style of painting.
